Lancaster Parking Authority’s

“Art on Orange”

Temporary Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition

Introduction

The Lancaster Parking Authority (LPA) is offering one artist or sponsoring organization the opportunity to display outdoor artwork in a highly visible city location. This is the first time Lancaster Parking Authority has offered an art exhibition opportunity and, if successful, the program could expand into an annual event.

Background

The temporary display of a single work of outdoor art will take place on W. Orange Street in front of the Prince Street parking garage, located in downtown Lancaster. The Prince Street Garage, which has 1,150 spaces, is used by commuters, visitors to Lancaster, and patrons of near-by shops and attractions such as Central Market and Fulton Opera House. The Garage features unique architectural elements including a cylindrical access ramp and a night-time LED display. The site is near the entrance to Lancaster’s Gallery Row which attracts thousands of visitors to the city for First Friday and the spring and autumn Art Walks. Selected artwork will be on display from April 1, 2010 to October 18, 2010.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to professional artists or sponsoring organizations residing or located in Lancaster County, PA. The selected artist or sponsoring organization will be responsible for installation, insurance, maintenance and repair, removal of the artwork and the restoration of the site.

Lancaster Parking Authority is offering a $500 honorarium.

Scope of Work

One artist or sponsoring organization will be chosen for this project. The site, which benefits from some lighting, is on Orange Street. A concrete pad will be provided along with an identifying sign. The sign will be in a material and of a format selected by the Lancaster Parking Authority. Artist’s or sponsoring organization’s phone number or web-site address will be placed on the sign.

The selected artist will be expected to work with Lancaster Parking Authority representatives to coordinate installation and removal of the work. Artwork may be subject to various restrictions, for example: an artwork may not be placed in the street, may not impede pedestrian traffic or vehicular site lines, may not pose a safety hazard or may be required to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Media

Artwork shall be of a suitable outdoor media that is durable, permanent, presents no public safety hazards and can be easily maintained. Materials should be appropriate for the site.

ADA – (Americans with Disabilities Act) and Local Code Compliance
